52 earrings: #51 Aged Spirals

Only one more pair to go! Patinated copper and lampwork glass this time.

#51 Aged Spirals

13.12.16_E51_AgedSpirals_01

I got out the heftier copper wire and made a pair of hammered spirals with two of my lampwork glass beads on them. The beads have a mix of green frit on a misty translucent background. I made big rounded earwires, put them in liver of sulphur to patinate until black, then tumbled them for a bit for a gunmetal finish before giving the surfaces a quick going-over with a sanding sponge to bring back a little copper.

52 earrings: #45 Green & Yellow

Kumihimo and copper.

#45 Green & Yellow

13.11.03_E45_Green&Yellow_03

I wanted to do some different shapes with my kumihimo braids, so here I have braids in bright greens and yellow, hanging in horseshoe shape from chunky copper wire-wrapped bails. I’d made a few of the little hammered wire doodles previously and hung one in the centre of each, with a few jumprings to let them move. I made elongated copper earwires.

52 earrings: #32 Snaketrails

This pair have been sitting about waiting for me to first LOS them and then tumble them, but here we are!

#32 Snaketrails

13.08.13_E32_Snaketrails_01

I hammered the copper rings for texture and wire-wrapped a pair of my lampwork beads – these two were a go at olive tiger beads. They’ve got little hollow copper beads on the dangles alongside the lampwork. I made the earwires and put everything together, then used liver of sulphur to give a full black patina, then put them in the tumbler to polish them back up to something more like a warm gunmetal/dark bronze.

52 earrings: #20 Dangling Blues

This week I went with blue and silver.

#20 Dangling Blues

13.05.11_E20_DanglingBlues_01

I used some of my lampwork spacers in various shades of blue and made hammered sterling elongated headpins. A little blue seed bead stops the larger-holed lampwork beads from sliding off. I used some of my sterling earwires: the ball ends are hammered flat.

52 earrings: #11 Droplets

This design has been sitting around half-finished for some time – the copper washer needed tidying up and I hadn’t got round to it. I did a batch of them recently: annealed, pickled, textured with a hammer, drilled holes and then tumbled to make them very very shiny. These ones I used a ball pein hammer to texture.

The drops are borosilicate glass by Unicorne Beads in the US. We have a supplier over here, so I got them at a bead fair some time ago. They do these drops in all sorts of colours – it was hard to choose, but I’m a sucker for tealy blues! I made a pair of copper ball-ended earwires to go with them.

52 earrings: #9 Misty Mountains

For these earrings, I used a pair of ceramic spikes by Petra Carpreau of Scorched Earth on Etsy.

#9 Misty Mountains

13.02.08_E09_MistyMountains_01

I paired them with two African blood jade semi-precious beads – they have the same mottled green as the spikes, with the addition of earthy red. Wire-wrapped in sterling silver and hanging from sterling earwires. I hammered the balled ends of the earwires flat as they were fairly ‘rustic’! (See my last mention of having lost my auflux…)

I am umming about antiquing the silver to gunmetal so it matches the loops on the spikes better. I’ve got no idea if my liver of sulphur still works, however… I got it a while ago, have never used it, and it’s the liquid kind that doesn’t have a long shelf life. I wouldn’t want to get it in the top unglazed section of the spikes, either.

So I’m still considering that and should probably try it out on some copper first to see how it goes. I know you can try it with hardboiled egg in place of the liver of sulphur, but that honestly sounds like too much faffing about.
