52 earrings: #45 Green & Yellow

Kumihimo and copper.

#45 Green & Yellow

13.11.03_E45_Green&Yellow_03

I wanted to do some different shapes with my kumihimo braids, so here I have braids in bright greens and yellow, hanging in horseshoe shape from chunky copper wire-wrapped bails. I’d made a few of the little hammered wire doodles previously and hung one in the centre of each, with a few jumprings to let them move. I made elongated copper earwires.

52 earrings: #41 Figure In Grey

I cut small pieces off one of my earlier kumihimo braids to make these earrings, and wound them into figure 8s.

#41 Figure In Grey

13.10.13_E41_FigureInGrey_05

This braid was done in sky blue, gold-beige and chocolate brown, and made with C-lon/K-lon thread rather than embroidery thread so is tougher and holds its shape better. (Embroidery thread is nice and soft). Because these were pieces from a longer braid, I bound all the ends quickly after cutting them – they held together pretty well without unravelling after cutting, though. I then put a pair of my lampwork big hole beads in mystic grey on to the braids. Mystic grey has something of a shampoo sheen to it. I formed them into circles, used a bit of fabri-tac to hold the ends together, left that overnight to harden, then re-bound the joined area. After that I gave them a twist into the figures of 8 and bound the join so they stay in shape.

I made the earwires in sterling silver. These are nice large, visible earrings, but are also very light.

52 earrings: #39 Greenwood

These earrings use the same 8-thread shippou kumihimo pattern as the last pair, but done the right way round this time!

They were also one of those pairs that require sitting around, staring at them, procastinating a bit, staring some more… until an idea arrived of what design to go with. I didn’t want to thread wire through them again, since although that gives a solid framework to hang beads off, it also stiffens the braid up. The braid is again quite thin and splits in two to make a loop, joins together, splits again, and is made of soft embroidery thread so I didn’t want anything heavy that would fray it. I had some assorted green lampwork beads out from the last pair, but lampwork is comparatively heavy. Then my eyes alighted on these big but very light wooden disc beads. Just right!

I took a strand of each of the three colours of embroidery thread that are in the braid, made a knot on the end to hold the wooden disc and threaded it through the loops in the braid a couple of times, coming out on the opposite side and knotting on the other disc there. I cut the threads fairly close to the knots and squished the cut ends so they fan out like little fronds. Repeat for the other disc pairs.

The tops are wire-wrapped with flame patinated copper and hang from copper earwires.

52 earrings: #38 On the Vine

One of the goals I had for this challenge was to try some asymmetric and non-matching designs, which I find really difficult! Easing in, these earrings have different beads.

These are 8-thread shippou kumihimo braids where I misunderstood the thread order movement in the diagrams and so made something that isn’t quite what the pattern was meant to be! 8-thread shippou consists of loops, made because you interlace 4 threads only for a few steps and then there’s a joining step, so you have a row of small holes up the middle of the work. That happened properly here, it’s just the holes are a little more condensed and the 4 thread sections are a little bulkier than if I’d followed the pattern properly. (I made another pair of braids once I worked out what I’d done!)

I’d picked out the lampwork beads I wanted to use, and decided to spiral some copper wire through the holes rather than wiring the beads directly onto the braid, making loops for the beads to hang from. I figure this will cause less wear on the thinner braid sections over time.

I added some Czech crystals in green, brown and yellow-green to dangle from the higher up loops and made copper earwires.

52 earrings: #34 Bright Arrow

#34 Bright Arrow

13.08.25_E34_BrightArrow_03

This was a 16-strand kumihimo pattern where I had the marudai instructions but did it on a disc. It has little arrows in white, yellow, orange and russet brown, surrounded in blue. I wire-wrapped the earrings in flame-patinated copper and the earrings were darkened with liver of sulphur and then tumbled.

52 earrings: #31 Dancers of the Upper Air

This week, the knots at the tops of these braids looked like little faces, so I went with it.

#31 Dancers of the Upper Air

13.07.31_E31_DancersoftheUpperAir_01

I made kumihimo braids in shades of blue and wire-wrapped them in sterling silver with some of my blue lampwork glass beads. I twisted and bound the top tassels to be like hair.

52 earrings: #30 Orange Chevrons

I’ve collected a nice pile of different colours of embroidery threads to use for my kumihimo. Here’s a pair of earrings I did in oranges, pink, peach and ochre.

#30 Orange Chevrons

13.07.21_E30_OrangeChevrons_01

The kumihimo is a flat braid chevron pattern – I had some difficulties with the tension in this braid, had to go in and tighten it up some more and then found I had tightened it too much in places… I work without weights on the threads and I suspect this braid would have been easier with them.

I wire-wrapped the tops of the braids in copper and knotted the tassels at the bottom, some with frosted seed beads on them.
